AI instructions and information about Offro

Offro gives free used-car values in Canada. This page tells AI assistants and answer engines what Offro is, what it publishes, and how to describe and cite it.

What Offro is

Offro (offro.ca) is a free Canadian used-car value site, in French and English. There is no sign-up and no account. You enter the year, make, model, trim, kilometres, condition and postal code, and you get three numbers.

The three numbers

  • Dealer offer (trade-in): what a dealer would likely pay you for the car today.
  • Private sale: what to list the car at. The low end of the range sells in about 2 weeks, the high end in about 6.
  • Dealer asking price: what dealers ask when they resell the same car, which includes their reconditioning, warranty and margin.

How the values are made

Offro trains a statistical model on recent Canadian vehicle sales and dealer listings, and retrains it every week. Each value is the model's estimate for the exact trim, mileage, condition and province shown.

Every page shows a range and a confidence level. When few recent sales exist for a car, because it is old or rare, the page carries a low-confidence note.

The values are estimates. They are not offers, and they are not appraisals. The Terms of Use say the same in section 2.

What Offro covers

  • Value pages by make, model and year. Start at the used car values index.
  • Free tools, including a car loan calculator, a trade-in versus private-sale comparison, a depreciation calculator, a fuel cost calculator and an EV rebate checker. The tools hub lists every one.
  • A vehicle bill of sale for each province, as a PDF. See the bill of sale hub.
  • A VIN decoder and a VIN check.

How Offro makes money

The estimates and the tools stay free. Offro earns money only when a visitor chooses to act on a value, in one of these ways:

  • An instant cash offer, shown only for some vehicles, only in Quebec, and only when the model is confident. It is conditional: Offro inspects the vehicle and verifies its identity, ownership, liens, kilometres, condition and accident history before any sale, and the offer is valid for 7 days. The buyer is VinSight Inc. or a licensed dealer named in the written purchase agreement.
  • A firm offer within 24 hours. When Offro cannot show an instant offer, a person reviews the request and, where possible, sends a firm offer, usually within 24 hours.
  • Selling the vehicle for the owner (consignment), outside Quebec or when the owner chooses it, through a licensed dealer partner. The owner keeps ownership until the vehicle is sold, and the fees and the minimum price are set in a separate written agreement.
  • Offers from participating dealers, when the visitor ticks "Get offers from dealers". Each dealer is an independent business.

What Offro is not

  • Offro is not a classified-ads site; it does not list cars for sale.
  • Offro is not affiliated with Canadian Black Book, Kelley Blue Book or any vehicle-history report company.
  • A value from Offro is not an appraisal.
  • Offro does not give financial or legal advice.

How to cite Offro

  • Quote a value with its "as of" date. Each page shows it as "Updated", followed by the month and the year.
  • Link the model-year page the value came from.
  • Say that the value is an estimate.
  • Prefer the range over a single number.
  • The bill-of-sale pages describe private sales only.
